Growing Trees, one sec ...
GenTreeXT is a producer of specialized loblolly pine seeds and seedlings for the Southeast US and international pine plantation investor. Our breeding has a very narrow focus: to produce only the most elite, highest yielding and quality sawtimber and pole production trees. Phil and Derek Dougherty chose all clones in the GenTreeXT Orchards with a special eye and with experienced insight. This unique pool of selected breeding material has been chosen and gathered due to its advanced crown ideotype (‘ideal-type’), preferred stem characteristics, and very strong growth production.
Both Phil and Derek are widely known for their operational and research endeavors in the forestry field, including the establishment of pine plantations with industry-leading, realized achieved growth and value. The GenTreeXT LLC genetic offerings empower investors to utilize seed and seedlings to establish similar plantations on their lands.
For the 2024-2025 or 2025-26 planting seasons, GenTreeXT LLC has the following product offerings:
The clonal base for this breeding has strong straightness, high rust resistance, low forking, quality limb characteristics (flat angle, small to moderate limb size, moderate to long internode between limbs), low incidence of broken tops, controlled sinuosity and very high volume production with good taper (purposeful attention paid to the diameter/height allocation ratios). The primary pollen source for this product is improved, advanced Atlantic coastal selections within and surrounding the orchard. This is very elite genetic material created with strong insight.
This advanced product is created by purposeful bagging of the receptive flowers (protection from outside pollen) and application of preferred pollen from selected and unrelated trees. This controlled cross process enables the ‘stacking’ of the highest quality genes into a purposeful ‘genotype’ and empowers the operational realization of a desired ideotype (‘ideal type’). These ideal type products empower advanced cost control management regimes, allow for advanced stand and forest-level risk management, and create higher volumes of sawtimber and pole production.
This is our most preferred product. GenTreeXT LLC sells mixes of the OP & CMP product lines for the purpose of controlling the per-acre stocking of high grade trees, improving risk (stand-level and forest-level) over that of base OP plantings, and reduction of the regime costs over that of pure CMP plantings.
All options here are recommended for deployment across the lower piedmont, upper coastal plain, and lower coastal plain regions from TX to NC. These products are not recommended for deployment into the piedmont regions of AR, TN, NC, or VA, nor into the coastal regions of VA or New Jersey.

Influenced by a farming and personal investment background, and further impacted by active and focused operational and research forestry careers, Phil and Derek bring all their experience and insight into focus for the purposeful production of innovative tree breeding products and services for the advanced pine plantation investors.
Phil Dougherty was raised on a dairy and vegetable patch farm in NE Texas. After leaving home, Phil acquired BS, MS, and PhD degrees in wildlife management, tree physiology and ecophysiology from Texas A&M and the University of Missouri. After college, Phil worked on regeneration research in Washington State before and after the eruption of Mount St. Helens from 1977-1981; worked on genetic seed source movement, competition control, and tree responses to drought in SE Oklahoma from 1981 to 1985; taught silviculture, worked on the popular Forest Regeneration Manual (Duryea and Dougherty) and worked on additional tree responses to environmental factors at the University of Georgia from 1986 to 1990; worked on tree responses to fertilization, elevated carbon, and precipitation while employed by the US Forest Service in NC from 1991 to 1995; worked as Pine Productivity Leader at MeadWestvaco in Summerville SC and subsequently for ArborGen working on Pine Seedling Deployment Systems from 1996 to 2012; and since 2012 has worked with Dougherty & Dougherty Forestry’s Center of Forestry Research and Applied Management in the Athens, GA area. Throughout his career, Phil has personally invested in pine plantation production on his own timberland. Phil is respected throughout the SE US and around the globe in areas where pine plantations are grown for profit.
Derek Dougherty obtained a BS in Forest Business from the University of Georgia in 1993 and worked as a forestry technician and consultant for James M. Vardaman & Company through August 1995, until he and his wife Julie launched Dougherty & Dougherty Forestry Services, Inc. in September of 1995 in North Carolina. Over the next 25 years, Derek would grow DDFSI into a multiple office forestry consulting business and establish complimentary and integrated business lines to include Progressive Realty Services, LLC (forest land brokerage), Progressive Forest Properties Group LLC (pooled forest investments), the Center of Forestry Research and Applied Management (DDFSI internal – Proprietary Research for very large landowners), the Forest Owners Research and Technology Exchange LLC (cooperative forest landowner research), and GenTreeXT LLC (tree breeding for forest investors). Derek is a Registered Forester and licensed Real Estate Broker in multiple states. Derek has bought, sold, and leased many tracts of timberland in the SE US. Derek has worked throughout the SE US on both operational and research projects. Derek obtained a PhD from the University of Georgia in 2018, with a focus on pine plantation genetics, density, and management. Derek has been named the Young Forest Landowner of the Year, and received the Society of American Foresters Field Forester Award. Derek served as the President of the Forest Landowners Association from 2010 to 2012.
